Usona Institute
At the Usona Institute Campus, acoustic design transcends traditional metrics. This is the world’s first purpose-built environment for psychedelic therapy research. Here, sound fundamentally shapes therapeutic outcomes.
Each therapy room captures acoustic precision at its most human scale. The acoustic environment is rendered calmly neutral to function as a silent environment or to accommodate the addition of carefully developed audio to support the therapeutic process. These environments extend to the unique hydrotherapy rooms in the lower level where light and sound interplay with the soundscape of water as part of the healing process.
The campus’s dual mission required sophisticated spatial choreography. Educational spaces accommodate 70+ researchers and remote participants, demanding crystal-clear speech intelligibility. Meanwhile, adjacent research areas require complete isolation with no sound bleeding to spaces where participants might be in deeply vulnerable therapeutic states. Floating floors, specialized wall assemblies, and isolated ceiling structures create complete acoustic separation. HVAC systems received obsessive attention such as custom silencers and vibration isolation to eliminate mechanical intrusions that could compromise both research validity and participant safety.
