Northwestern University,
School of Communications Audiology Clinic
The Audiology Clinic at the Northwestern University School of Communications is a facility for research, education, and clinical treatment. The placement of the Clinic on the first floor a new parking structure led to a wide range of noise and vibration isolation challenges, which were addressed by preserving a structural break between all treatment & evaluation rooms and the surrounding parking structure.
In addition to the four sound booths (which meet requirements for open ear testing) and numerous therapy, procedure, and hearing aid fit rooms the Clinic includes two unique facilities that aid in both pedagogy and medical treatment. The Diagnostic Theater is a 50-seat tiered classroom in which students can observe medical procedures performed by clinicians; these procedures can also be broadcast to remote sites via an integrated distance learning system.
The Auditory Rehabilitation Room is a space that can be aurally transformed using an electronic enhancement system into a wide range of soundscapes, creating a perception of three-dimensional and “moving” sound sources to help clinic patients re-train their hearing after procedures or with new hearing devices.
