Lurie Children’s Hospital Sky Garden
The Crown Sky Garden occupies 5,000 square feet on the 11th floor of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital, a 23-story tower in Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood. Designed by landscape architect Mikyoung Kim, the glass-enclosed space interweaves light, water, and color, grounded in research linking access to natural light and contemplative space to reduced patient recovery time. Bamboo groves, marble fountains, and a color-shifting eco-resin wall define the interior, while the adjacent Sky Café sits at the garden's more active edge.
That glazed greenhouse envelope creates difficult acoustic conditions: hard reflective surfaces, a double-height volume, and a lively program. Threshold provided acoustic guidance to reduce reverberation in the garden and improve the acoustic environment of the neighboring dining room, working within the material and infection-control constraints of a pediatric healthcare facility.
