Access Smithsonian

We partnered with the Smithsonian Institution's Access Smithsonian office to address a critical challenge in visitor experience: the inconsistent deployment of assistive listening systems across the Institution's complex museum environment. The Smithsonian has long been committed to ensuring that all visitors, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing, can access exhibitions and programs fully and independently. Yet the Institution's diverse operational contexts, each with its own acoustic and technical constraints, resulted in systems that were difficult for visitors to discover and challenging for staff to maintain. We recognized that fixing this problem required both a clear-eyed assessment of what existed and thoughtful evaluation of what might work better across different facility types.

We worked closely with the Solutions for Assistive Listening Working Group to inventory all existing assistive listening systems currently in operation and to evaluate both established and emerging technologies suited to the Smithsonian's needs. This investigation was essential because there is no one-size-fits-all assistive listening solution. A system that works well in a theater creates different opportunities and constraints than one deployed at an information desk or within an exhibition gallery. We approached the Institution as collaborators, valuing the expertise of users and staff alongside our own technical knowledge.

Our work included systematic testing of various assistive listening systems and delivery methods across five distinct facility domains: exhibition areas, classrooms and meeting rooms, information desks, theaters and auditoriums, and portable systems for staff-led tours. We conducted this testing in one pre-selected Smithsonian unit per domain, working with end users and staff to understand real-world performance and usability. The result was a comprehensive report that recommended systems best suited to each domain, along with clear guidance on benefits, disadvantages, and costs. This foundation positions the Institution to make confident, informed decisions about assistive listening deployment moving forward.
